How To Keep Your Bluestone Flooring In Top Condition

Posted on

Bluestone is a popular material for patios and hard floors, because of its attractive appearance and durability. Keeping it properly cleaned and maintained is important if it is to stay in good condition, so here are some tips for looking after your bluestone.

Sweep

Firstly, make sure you keep any debris off your bluestone flooring by regularly sweeping it. This is particularly important if you are using it as an outdoor surface. Move any furniture off the stone so you can get to the whole area, and sweep any dirt and leaves away with a broom. You can also use a vacuum cleaner on an indoor surface.

Rinse

An outdoor surface can then be rinsed down with the garden hose. There is no need to use any cleaning solutions at this stage. Don't be tempted to power wash the bluestone though as this could cause damage to the finish.

Scrub

Although the above will be enough for routine cleaning of your bluestone, you may need to take extra steps if mud or rotting leaves have got stuck to the stone. Scrub the problem areas with a scrubbing brush dipped in a solution of mild detergent in warm water until the dirt comes off. You should then rinse the area with clean water.

Mildew

Moss, mildew or mould can also take root on your bluestone and will need extra care to remove. Use a weak solution of hydrogen peroxide, or find a commercial cleaner for the purpose that is suitable for bluestone. Leave the solution over the problem for a few minutes before scrubbing it off and rinsing.

Seal

Prevention is always best, and the greatest way to keep your bluestone clean is to seal it. There are many sealers available that will protect the stone from everyday use. Make sure you buy one suitable for bluestone, and apply it when the surface is clean and dry. You will probably need two coats, leaving it for a day or two after the first.

Repair

Bluestone is a very tough material, but it may suffer damage over the years. If this is the case, don't try to fix it yourself as this could make things worse. Instead, you should call in a professional restorer to ensure the repair is carried out effectively and safely.

Regular cleaning and maintenance will ensure your bluestone floor stays as colourful and comfortable as the day it was installed. Your installer will be happy to answer any further questions about how to keep it in good condition.
